  103.   WinNET Mail (TM) is a Windows 3.1/Windows 95 application for sending
  104.   and receiving Electronic Mail and News articles with the world-wide
  105.   Internet and Usenet networks using just your Windows system and a
  106.   modem.  The connection with the Internet and Usenet is provided through
  107.   WinNET Communications' computer system providing WinNET (SM) service.
  108.   WinNET Communications provides a Web and FTP site for all accounts and
  109.   ISDN and 28.8v.34 access for no extra charge.

  111.   W h a t   i s  TCP/IP?
  112.  
  113.   TCP/IP is software that allows you to establish a direct connection to
  114.   the Internet network so that you can use client software that requires
  115.   interactive access to network resources. Examples of such client
  116.   software would include World Wide Web (WWW) browsing software such as
  117.   Mosaic or NETSCAPE, on-line FTP programs, Internet Relay Chat, Internet
  118.   Talk Radio, Gopher, Telnet, and so forth.  These programs are not
  119.   included in the electronic distribution of WinNET, but public domain
  120.   versions of various Internet applications are available (free of
  121.   charge) through WinNET Communications once you set up an account.  In
  122.   fact, you can start downloading these programs as soon as you get
  123.   connected -- we provide installation support to make setting up TCP/IP
  124.   and various applications completely automatic.

  126.   WinNET's TCP/IP software is a special, high-performance version of Core
  127.   System's highly regarded Internet Connect product.  When you set up
  128.   WinNET, the TCP/IP software is transparently installed and set up to
  129.   operate using PPP (Point-to-Point) protocol for serial (modem)
  130.   communications.

  245. ===== Installation =====================================
  246.  
  247.   S e t t i n g   u p   W i n N E T   o n   y o u r   S y s t e m
  248.  
  249.   Following are instructions for setting up WinNET Mail on your system.
  250.  
  251.   If you received WinNET from CompuServe or some other electronic
  252.   bulletin board, create a temporary directory and copy the wnmail.zip
  253.   file to this directory. Run the pkunzip program (commonly available
  254.   shareware from PKWARE) to unzip the wnmail.zip file in this directory.
  255.  
  256.   From the Windows program manager File menu, or directly from the
  257.   Window's File Manage program, Run the SETUP.EXE program supplied with
  258.   the WinNET distribution. Use the More Information button to get more
  259.   information on each screen.  This program will also set up an Internet
  260.   Account for you with WinNET Communications Inc.'s Internet Service.
  261.  
  262.   This will ask you for billing and credit card information. The program
  263.   will call the WinNET Communications WinNET server and submit your
  264.   account request.  After a one minute pause, the program will call back
  265.   to verify that the account was accepted.
  266.  
  267.   All account requests will be accepted unless the System Name that you
  268.   choose under SETUP is already taken by another WinNET customer.  If the
  269.   account request is not successful, you will need to re-run SETUP,
  270.   select a different System Name, and re-run the account program.
  271.  
  272.       U p g r a d i n g   f r o m   a n
  273.  
  274.         e a r l i e r   v e r s i o n   o f   W i n N E T
  275.  
  276.   The instructions for upgrading a previous version of WinNET are
  277.   basically the same as outlined in the above steps describing a new
  278.   installation.   When you are asked to specify the directory where
  279.   WinNET should be installed, specify the same directory where your old
  280.   copy of WinNET was installed.  This will cause the setup program to
  281.   overwrite the old WinNET files with the files from the new version.
  282.   Your old setup parameters will be detected and appear as the defaults
  283.   in the setup process.
  284.  
  285.   NOTE: Do not update WinNET with a earlier version of WinNET. Always use
  286.   the same version as installed or a later version.
  287.  
  288.   SPECIAL EXCEPTION: Version 2.50 and later of the sharware WinNET will
  289.   recognize WinNET Plus 3.0 (and later versions) and will not overwrite
  290.   the executables and will just install the online software and related
  291.   files.
  292.  
  293.     P r o b l e m s   w i t h   W i n N E T   S e t u p
  294.  
  295.   The most likely source of problems that you may have with WinNET Mail
  296.   is the SETUP Communications Parameters:
  297.  
  298.     1.  Make sure that the COM port is set to the port that your modem
  299.     uses.
  300.  
  301.     2.  Make sure that the interface speed it not set faster than your
  302.     modem can handle.  (28.8 v.fc modem owners please see node.txt)
  303.  
  304.     3.  Verify that the telephone number being dialed will work correctly
  305.     from your facility and area.
  306.

  320. Windows Terminal program.  You can also check that the modem strings
  321. supplied on the Communications Parameters screen work with you modem as
  322. well.
